Every spring (well, almost) we make a pilgrimage in late February or early March to the central Platte River Valley to observe the sandhill crane migration. This year, we were headed to Arizona, and all we managed was a single pass through our primary route near Doniphan, and we saw not a single crane. "All posing for pictures up on the Interstate," I muttered. So we were especially glad to find a few en route, in the San Luis Valley between Alamosa and Del Norte. Colorado. But for the snow-capped peaks in the background, this could have been Nebraska.
