El Malpais, part one

And we're back! I've fallen way behind on blogging, but not for lack of material. Quite the reverse—Jessa and I took another Southwestern trip last month, and the resulting mountain of photos has had me intimidated, but over the next couple of weeks or so I shall try to dig out from under the pile, find some order in the beauty, and share at least a part of our holiday with you.

First up: photos from El Malpais National Monument, El Malpais National Conservation Area, and the Acoma Indian Reservation in western New Mexico.

The first spot we visited was an upland of sandstone cliffs, with black basaltic scabland visible on the valley floor below. (We'll come to that later.) The signs are no joke, but the views...oh, the views.

Just in from the cliff rim are little pocket landscapes, some dried mud on its way to becoming caliche, and others little gardens where grama grasses, sage, and tiny oaks grow in powder-fine sand.

"Land of Enchantment", indeed.

More to come from our afternoon at El Malpais soon.

Thanks, Mike. The photos were taken by my wife, Jessica, but it's always a joint effort.
