The spider was nearly the size of my outstretched hand. (I buy my gloves in size XL.) The kind of arachnid that might bring to mind Shelob or Aragog.
But did you notice the moth?
I was born on the shores of the Chesapeake Bay
Maryland and Virginia have faded away
And I keep thinking tomorrow is coming today
So I am endlessly waiting...

Sphinx moth? Adult stage of tomato hornworm, if it is.
The spider is spectacular.
Chas, I couldn't tell you. I do see sphinx moths (a.k.a. hummingbird moths) in Nebraska, but not quite as big as this. And this moth I left alone, so I never saw it fly. I might never have seen it at all; Ellie is the one who spotted it while I was photographing the spider.
