King of Bohemia

A few days ago, Stekoa, Anya, and I drove up to the Bohemian Alps—a region of rolling hills settled by Czech immigrants in the 19th century—near Prague, Nebraska. (Maxine, getting up in years and having hunted hard the day before, opted for a day off.) We were rewarded with lovely scenery and a fantastic flight on this, our last rabbit of 2018. There will be more before the season ends, inshallah.

Hey Mark, love seeing this. Ive always held a passing interest in Falconry. Is there an active Falconry Club nearby Lincoln? Any get togethers where a stranger could tag along to watch? Ive seen mention of the Nebraska Falconry Association but the website never seems to work for me. Either way keep the Bird posts coming.

Hi Jason,

Sorry for the delayed response. The press of real life has kept me off the computer of late—not that that's necessarily a bad thing...

The demise of the NFA website is my fault, I'm afraid; another casualty of real life's more severe chaos a few years back. The club itself seems to be in one of its quiescent phases—whether owing to lassitude on the part of current leadership or to a disconnected membership I couldn't say, though I suspect both. I expect we will come back together as an active group eventually, but this season has seen no formal gatherings, just a couple of small, hastily-convened mini-meets.

As for Lincoln, there are only a few falconers here, the best and most experienced of whom has taken the last couple of years off for health reasons. My own season is entering its denouement, with the usual February mix of bitter cold and treacherous mud on alternate days. Might I suggest you contact me this coming autumn, when conditions are far more favourable for social hawking?

I may get in another hawking post or two before the season is completely done, so stay tuned and thanks for visiting Flyover Country!

Best,

Mark
